S. S. Van Dine
S. S. Van Dine was the pseudonym for American author Willard Huntington Wright (1888-1939). Wright was active in cultural circles and embarrassed to use his own name when writing mass market fiction, although it was the sales of his Philo Vance detective novels which enabled him to gain wealth during the Depression.
